Advanced synchronous rectifying Buck MOSFET driver with protection feature

The ISL6612 and ISL6613 are high-frequency MOSFET drivers specifically designed to drive up and down power N-channel MosFeTs in synchronous rectified buck converter topologies. These drivers are combined with HIP63xx or ISL65xx polyphase Buck PWM controllers and n-channel MosFETs to form a complete core voltage regulator solution for advanced microprocessors. The ISL6612 drives the upper grid up to 12V, while the lower grid can be independently driven in the 5V to 12V range.

Block Diagram

The ISL6613 drives the upper and lower doors in the 5V to 12V range. This drive voltage provides the flexibility necessary to optimize applications involving trade-offs between grid charge and conduction loss. Advanced adaptive zero-through-protection is integrated to prevent the upper and lower MOSFeTs from conducting at the same time and minimize dead zone time. These products add overvoltage protection to operate before the VCC exceeds its on-off threshold, at which the PHASE node connects to the gate of the low-side MOSFET (LGATE).

The output voltage of the converter is then limited by the threshold of the lower side mosFEts, which provides some protection for the microprocessor if the upper mosFEts are short-circuited during startup. When the junction temperature exceeds +150°C(usually), overtemperature protection prevents failure due to excessive power consumption by turning off the output. Once the junction temperature returns to +108°C(usually), the drive is reset.

Typical application

These drivers also feature a three-state PWM input that works in conjunction with Intersil's polyphase PWM controller to prevent negative transients of the output voltage when the output is turned off. This feature eliminates Schottky diodes, which are used in some systems to protect loads from reverse output voltage events
