With Maxim Integrated Products' MAX14933 and MAX14937 two-channel, bidirectional digital isolators, designers can save space and implement more flexible designs. They transfer digital signals between bidirectional circuits and provide complete galvanic isolation between the two power domains, while using fewer components to save board space. They are the latest additions to Maxim's recently launched family of ultra-robust four-channel digital isolators, including the MAX14930-MAX14932 and MAX14934-MAX14936. These devices provide best-in-class speed, propagation delay, skew, and jitter for timing-sensitive applications while maintaining a very strong isolation barrier between the two power domains. Digital isolators are replacing optocouplers in many applications because they have the same isolation function, while taking up less board space and lower power consumption. The MAX14933 and MAX14937 provide high-voltage isolation of 2.75kVrms or 5kVrms, respectively. They support DC data rates up to 1.7MHz and can be used on isolated I²C buses with or without clock expansion. Both products have independent 2.25V to 5.5V power supplies on each side of the isolator and provide open-drain channels for applications that need to transmit data in both directions on the same line. Typical applications include power supplies, battery management systems, instruments, and interfaces for I²C, SMBus or PMBus.
