New common mode choke for LED lighting

Schaffner has expanded its range of lighting application components. The new ED100/ED101 EMC filter family was developed specifically for the needs of LED driver circuits. A substantial differential mode inductor matches the common mode inductor of the new filter. Since only one component is required on the PCB, both types of noise can be mitigated, saving cost and space while improving reliability.

Leds have upended the lighting industry over the past decade, and no application is immune. Even demanding and ambitious applications, such as powerful street lights and car headlights, are now typical of leds.

Leds are very energy efficient and durable, but must be powered by a well-controlled current. They are prone to overcurrent, and the "drive circuit" keeps the current supply within an ideal range to prevent damage to the LEDS.

LED lighting drivers need to be efficient, cost effective and EMC compliant. For EMI suppression, a common mode choke is a good substitute for x capacitors when dealing with ground noise. They reduce leakage current and help stabilize the power factor by avoiding x capacitors.

Series differential mode noise reduction offers two performance options on request: high (ED100) and very high (ED101). The new filter has a maximum continuous operating voltage of 300VAC, 50/60Hz and meets the requirements of RoHS and REACH regulations.

Typical applications are LED devices. Fluorescent lamp ballasts or any other applications requiring high differential mode performance. In particular, LED driver circuits and displays,
