Renesas Electronics, a global semiconductor solutions provider, announced the IEEE 1588-enabled ClockMatrix System Synchronizer, the 8A34001, which will be used in the AMD Zynq UltraScale+ RFSoC DFE ZCU670 evaluation kit and reference design for 5G NR applications.

The 8A34001 System Synchronizer for IEEE 1588 is part of the Renesas ClockMatrix family of high-performance, precise timing solutions designed to simplify clock design for high-speed applications. Based on IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) and Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE), the 8A34001 brings ultra-low jitter precise timing signals. Exceeds next-generation 5G communication requirements, including synchronization, while achieving full ITU-T G.8273.2 T-BC/T-TSC Level C and Level D compliance. Renesas provides open source SYNCE4L and PCM4L based on PTP4L open source code, and device drivers in the Linux kernel of the 8A34001. In contrast, other solutions of the same type rely on proprietary software that is difficult for end users to integrate or customize on their software platform.

As an evaluation and development platform based on Zynq UltraScale+ RFSoC DFE, AMD ZCU670 is AMD's latest 5G NR chip for FR1 and FR2 (mmWave) O-RAN applications. The performance of the 8A34001 has been verified on the ZCU670 evaluation platform and shown to exceed 5G system requirements. Renesas can provide relevant compliance reports and test results upon request. This solution will be used to implement S-plane functionality in the O-RU reference design as part of the AMD O-RAN reference design.

Zaher Baidas, vice president of the Clocking Products Group at Renesas Electronics, said: "AMD is honored to have selected Renesas' ClockMatrix product family as the timing platform for its Zynq RFSoC DFE kit, the industry's premier 5G application development platform. This is a testament to the excellent performance, Ease of use, coupled with excellent design support, allows customers to save development time and effort."

Brendan Farley, corporate vice president of wireless engineering at AMD, said: "Our close collaboration with Renesas has created key features for AMD's O-RU reference design. We strongly believe that working with Renesas as an ecosystem partner provides proven and robust A technology-enabled solution that will significantly reduce the development effort for our mutual customers in the wireless space."
