STMicroelectronics has released new extension tools that bring the benefits of Microsoft Visual Studio Code (VS Code), Microsoft's integrated development environment, to the STM32 microcontroller. VS Code is a popular integrated development environment (IDE) known for its ease of use and flexibility. IntelliSense, for example, simplifies and speeds up code editing. Developers will now be able to enter the STM32 ecosystem from VS Code, making these features available to more embedded developers in the STM32 community, and making it easy for developers accustomed to developing advanced and consumer applications to create energy-efficient, compact, and cost-effective embedded solutions.

The new support tool expands the tool options available to all STM32 developers, including hardware integrators and mass market customers, who typically opt for commercial tools or STM32CubeIDE, stmicroelectronics's Eclipse-based STM32Cubeide free development environment. VS Code and STM32 VS Code Extension are free to use.

Marc Goodner, chief product manager at Microsoft, said: "By working in depth with STMicroelectronics, we have provided developers with the ability to use the STM32 project in Visual Studio Code, providing an outstanding solution for existing STM32 embedded developers, And extend the reach of the STM32 platform to the millions of developers already using Visual Studio Code."

"Integrating VS Code into the STM32 ecosystem allows more developers to take advantage of the industry-leading STM32 microcontroller," said Daniel Colonna, Director of marketing at ST Microcontroller. Developers who make VS Code their preferred development environment, including senior software developers, academics, hobbyists and makers, can now choose STM32 MCU to implement their ideas without leaving their preferred development environment."
